Becoming the Mother Your Soul Came Here to Be
Motherhood has a funny way of taking us places we never intended to go.
Sometimes those places are beautiful.
Sometimes they're messy.
Sometimes they're dark as hell.
And sometimes, if we're willing to listen, those dark places become the very places where we find our way back to ourselves.
That was one of the central themes of my conversation with Olivia Roff, a mystical guide for the soul and Spirit Baby Channel, on this week's episode of The Ecstatic Life Podcast.
Olivia's journey into this work began through motherhood itself—and through profound loss.
After experiencing two miscarriages, Olivia began exploring the idea of Spirit Babies: the belief that the souls of our future children may be present before conception and may have their own relationship with us before they enter our physical lives.
Through meditation and her own experiences, Olivia began communicating with the soul of the daughter she would eventually give birth to.
What followed wasn't simply a journey toward becoming a mother again.
It was a journey toward becoming herself.
We also talked about birth, birth trauma, and the way modern motherhood can become increasingly disconnected from the primal, embodied experience of being a woman.
Olivia shared her first birth story—a planned home birth that ultimately ended in a hospital transfer and significant intervention.
Years later, she experienced another home birth, but even that experience wasn't the serene, picture-perfect birth she had imagined.
It was wild.
Primal.
Loud.
Raw.
And afterward, she found herself feeling shame about that very wildness.
That struck me.
Because how often are women taught to be ashamed of the very things that make us powerful?
Our bodies.
Our sexuality.
Our anger.
Our intuition.
Our needs.
Our voices.
Our wildness.
What if the goal isn't to become less wild?
What if the invitation is to become more sovereign within our wildness?
One of the biggest takeaways I had from this conversation is that our children aren't simply people we are here to teach.
They are also our teachers.
They can teach us about patience.
About boundaries.
About surrender.
About our own nervous systems.
About our wounds.
About our capacity for love.
About the places where we've abandoned ourselves.
And sometimes they bring us face-to-face with the woman we've been trying not to become.
The question then becomes:
What is my child reflecting back to me?
Where is this experience asking me to come home to myself?
What truth have I been overriding?
What part of me is asking to be reborn?
Because perhaps becoming the mother your soul came here to be isn't about becoming a more perfect mother.
Perhaps it's about becoming a more whole woman.
