Why “Healthy” Isn’t Supposed to Feel Like Punishment
We’ve been sold a version of health that feels more like control than care.
Count this. Cut that. Burn it off. Be smaller. Try harder.
And somehow… in the middle of all that effort, so many women end up exhausted, disconnected, and quietly wondering why they still don’t feel good in their bodies.
Because here’s the truth no one shouts loud enough:
Health isn’t meant to feel like punishment.
Diet culture has trained us to believe that discipline equals worth. That shrinking ourselves (our bodies, our cravings, our joy) is the price we pay to be “enough.”
But a body that looks good and feels like shit?
That’s not wellness. That’s survival mode in a cute outfit.
In my conversation with Sarah Pettitt, we peel back the layers of this. Her journey moves through extremes—restriction, overtraining, burnout—and lands somewhere much softer, much wiser.
Sustainable. Nourishing. Human.
She said something that stayed with me:
“Small doesn’t mean sexy if it comes with less joy.”
Damn.
Because what are we really chasing if we have to abandon ourselves to get there?
Real health looks a lot less like obsession and a lot more like devotion.
It’s choosing whole, nourishing foods (most of the time) without turning your life into a math equation. It’s moving your body in ways that feel supportive, not punishing. It’s eating enough. Resting enough. Living enough.
It’s laughing over meals. It’s not spiraling after a weekend of indulgence. It’s knowing how to come back home to yourself… without shame riding shotgun.
And maybe most importantly, it’s changing the way you speak to yourself.
Because you cannot hate your way into a body you feel safe in.
