It’s that time of year again! We’ve passed the portion of the year full of cozying up with family and feasting. (Possibly over-indulging!) And now we’re entering into the time of year where we reset. We will set new goals. We will make commitments to health, wellness and fitness. We will let go of things that aren’t serving us, and begin things that shall. And we will detox!!

goals!

I will be beginning the new year with not one, but TWO DETOXES! (I go hard like that.)

Actually, the goal is this coming year being the year of the detox, as I am weaning my youngest and will (finally) be ending my 11 year stretch of being continuously pregnant and/or breastfeeding. (It is NOT advisable to do hard detoxes or fasts during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.) I have spent the last two years nourishing myself, and now I'm ready for a good reset! And, boy, do I have so much fun in store for the next 12 months: fasts, sweat lodges, enemas and flushes, oh my! Not to mention, I’m starting off the year with a month-long carnivore diet cleanse with my husband. And, believe it or not, this is actually the one that scares me the most.

carnivore diet

This commitment came about after my husband began getting regular migraines. He cut out all the bad habits and junky stuff he could, went totally straight-edge sober for months, made sure to be hydrated and get enough sleep, and still has been getting them. I suggested he might need a cleanse, a reset for his system; flush out the toxins that had built up from years of living in toxic environments and not being super nice to his body. I made lots of suggestions - most were a HELL NO. (Coffee enema?! You must be trippin…) But the one detox he could get behind: The Carnivore Diet (the controversial diet where you eat only meat, eggs and animal fats). Said to cure everything from mood disorders to autoimmune diseases and make you feel like a million bucks - after you get over the keto flu (the detox symptoms brought on from your body going into ketosis) and if you don’t stay on it too long.

This is an easy one for my hubby. He loves meat. It’s his staple. Me, not so much. I’ve had an ambivalent relationship with meat my whole life. I’ve had periods of vegetarianism, but they have left me feeling unhealthy, so I’ve always gone back to eating meat. My hesitation stems from my issue with killing other beings. (I wish I had enough qi (chi) to live without taking life, but I don't think that is my path this time around.) This internal ethical battle has led me to try to mitigate the suffering I cause by both sourcing my meat from local farmers and raising and slaughtering our own animals. But even when doing it ethically, I still feel unsure of the morality of taking a life. But, if it means supporting my husband’s health journey, I’m in.

I am anticipating some internal ethical struggle coming this January… It should make for some good growth!

The other detox practice I will be starting next month is a monthly round of the Amazing Liver and Gallbladder Flush. I will be doing this every new moon for the whole year. This is a protocol created by the late Andreas Moritz, who was a practitioner of Ayurveda, iridology, shiatsu and vibrational medicine, and wrote more than a dozen books on natural health.

the 400+ page book for this cleanse

The liver and gallbladder flush uses cherry juice, epsom salt, grapefruit and olive oil to help your body flush out gallstones (mainly clumps of cholesterol, fatty acids, calcium, bilirubin and toxins) blocking the bile ducts of the liver. Most of us living in the industrialized world (especially if you have a chronic illness like heart disease, arthritis, cancer, or diabetes) have hundreds or even thousands of gallstones in our livers!

I did this flush 11 years ago, just before becoming pregnant with my 10 year old, and was amazed to find (after hours of the complete and thorough elimination of EVERYTHING in my bowels) many pea green colored, semi-solid stones, resembling boba tea balls, floating in my toilet! The proof was in the bowl. Unfortunately, I was unable to complete the recommended protocol (flush every new moon until there are no stones, and then again a few more times for good measure) because of pregnancy/breastfeeding x 4 kids. Until now.

To be continued…
